Once saved forever saved?
Well, it is no new fact that the day we decide to give our lives to Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we receive salvation. The gift of salvation is honestly the best gift humanity has ever received. Such a priceless gift where a man gave himself for you and I, and paid the price of death that we were supposed to pay. That we may live in eternity with He and the Father (God) in heaven.
~A priceless gift indeed~
However, even free gifts sometimes come with conditions, and salvation is not excluded. The goal is that, upon receiving salvation, we are expected to strive to become more like Christ. We are called to live lives of holiness, righteousness, and purity, so that when unbelievers see us, they see people who reflect the character and nature of Jesus.
Sadly, it appears that the concepts of holiness, righteousness, and purity are no longer regarded as priorities among many Christians.
There are also doctrines and expressions that have become increasingly popular, such as, “Once saved, forever saved,” “God only looks at the heart,” and “Don’t judge!”
Such teachings, when misunderstood or misapplied, can serve to encourage professing Christians to continue living comfortably in sin, because they believe that God’s grace is sufficient to cover all their sins regardless of how they live.
~While God’s grace is sufficient, should we then abound in sin?~
Trust me, the last thing I am trying to do here is to judge you. However, it is important for us to examine whether the notion of “Once saved forever saved” Is truly in alignment with scriptures or not.
Lets take a clear look at Hebrews 10: 26-27; what it has to say about accepting salvation, and living a life of sin.
“Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.”
How about we look at 2 Peter 2: 20-21; this one shook me a lot more!
“And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life.”
We have been given a command to live a holy life, and when we reject that command outright, while still claiming to be “christains” we are simply signing ourselves up for a special corner in hell.
~Trust me, my goal is not to be harsh but to help you see that there is no room for lukewarmness~
No wonder Jesus himself said in Revelations 3: 15-16;
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold. I will spit you out of my mouth!”
Jesus isn’t going to accept being lukewarm, so why continue a lukewarm christain journey? If you are going to do this christian journey, there is a demand to live a life of holiness and purity.
Now it is important to note that living in sin and falling into sin are two very different things. One is an intentional act of choosing to live a life that contradicts the nature of Christ while the other is stumbling along the journey yet choosing to rise again and continue striving toward holiness.
~Just wanted to balance that out~
The pleasures of the world are not worth giving up eternity for. Besides it’s a lot better here on Jesus’ side (the HOT side).
Just thoughts from a girl who is immensely in love with Jesus.
